This morning, Grandvalira Resorts announced news for the 2024-2025 winter season, which will kick off on 30 November and run through 20 April, weather permitting. The Andorra domains have invested a total of €20.9 million for this winter, €17.2 million on Grandvalira, €2.3 million on Pal Arinsal, and €1.4 million on Ordino Arcalís. Grandvalira Resorts Marketing Director David Ledesma explained that these investments have primarily gone towards improvements to the artificial snowmaking network to strengthen the snow guarantee, new infrastructure and facilities like a new surface lift and the new Creand Slalom Stadium in Soldeu, and foundations for a new multipurpose building in Pas de la Casa, as well as sustainability and environmental measures that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, among others.
The company also remains committed to innovation and digitalisation, with a new Grandvalira Resorts app that lets customers download an eSIM to use mobile data throughout the Principality at a very competitive price and locate companions on the slopes while they're skiing at any time, among other features.
One of this season's major culinary revolutions is the arrival of chef Nandu Jubany, recipient of one Michelin star and five Repsol suns, to the Vodka Bar and Brasseria Piolet restaurants in Grandvalira, which will welcome more Michelin-star chefs for the Snow Club Gourmet days. Improvements to the ski and snowboard school services also continue, expanding the catalogue of activities and new experiences beyond skiing to round out the Grandvalira Resorts experience. “We have maintained a high level of investments with more than €20 million spent mainly on boosting the production capacity of artificial snow and, above all, improving the customer experience to strengthen Andorra's leadership position in the Pyrenees and Southern Europe. Most exciting are the future plans we're putting into action this winter which will transform the domains into spaces that are more fun to ski and more sustainable," Ledesma stated.
Investments and future plans
Grandvalira Resorts has an ambitious investment plan to expand the domain in the mid-to-long-term future and fortify its position as a sector leader. To start with, the new Encamp concession at Saetde comes online this winter for the operation of the Pas de la Casa - Grau Roig slopes for the next 50 years, with the main challenge of expanding the skiable domain at Pic del Maià, in addition to carrying out major improvements at the feet of the slopes in the Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, and Encamp sectors. Significant investments in sustainability are also included within the framework of an investment commitment of up to €100 million, with €42.6 million corresponding to the first 10 years of the concession. One of the first steps to be taken in the new concession is building a new multipurpose building at Pas de la Casa, where construction has already begun and which is scheduled to be ready for the 2026-2027 season.
Additionally, Pal Arinsal continues working on the ski link between the two sectors, a project that began last winter with the installation of the new Port Negre chairlift. With this link, Pal Arinsal will add a total of 7 km of skiable terrain to the resort, reaching a total of 70 km. New green and blue slopes are also planned for the Coll de la Botella area, considerably boosting this entrance to the resort, which will have more services and easier access. All this will involve a total investment of €30 million.
Improvements to the digital ecosystem with a new app and more features
This season, Grandvalira Resorts has unveiled a new proprietary app that has been developed in collaboration with the consulting company O2O to include a range of innovative features. One of the main innovations is the ability to purchase an eSIM directly from the app to quickly and easily connect to Andorra's mobile network, ensuring a high-quality connection for customers throughout their stay in the country with the most competitive prices on the market. This resource responds to one of the most popular demands of customers from outside of Andorra and will help them not have to worry about roaming. It is also worth recalling that the resorts already provide a Wi-Fi connection on their slopes with global service in all sectors of the country that allow users to browse freely with a single log-in, without having to switch between networks. Another important innovation of the app is the ability to locate friends and family on the slopes in real time, a feature that will help users meet up with each other and coordinate while they are skiing on the 308 km of Ordino Arcalís, Pal Arinsal, and Grandvalira.
These new features complement the ones skiers are already using and rating highly, like real-time information on slope conditions and lifts, display of resort maps, purchasing of day and season passes, the ability to book different resort services, and logging of ski statistics like the number of slopes descended, average speed, and kilometres skied, among others.
Slope news highlights
Grandvalira
Once again this year, major efforts have been focused on improving the snowmaking network to be able to offer the most possible skiable kilometres during the season and remain the sector's leader with the best offering in the Pyrenees at all times. To that end, this year the Grandvalira resort has upgraded a total of 129 cannons that are 90% more efficient in terms of energy consumption than the older models. Of these, 80 are to replace older models and 49 are new units to expand the kilometres of the current snowmaking network. It should also be noted that taking last season and this season together, Grandvalira Resorts has replaced more than 230 snowmakers, of which 84 are new additions. Another major improvement to the artificial snow production network for this season is the new Encampadana lake in the Canillo sector, with a capacity of 50,000 m3.
The Creand Slalom Stadium, a new slope with FIS homologation for high-level training, will also be unveiled this season. In parallel, the TK Eslalon surface lift, which is 501 m long with an elevation difference of 184 m, has been installed and will be able to carry up to 550 skiers per hour, facilitating rotation for training sessions. The Stadium will welcome skiers from the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE) as international competitors through the FIS, which will use the slope for training sessions right next to the Avet World Cup course. To guarantee the quality of the snow on this high-performance slope, Grandvalira has upgraded 10 snowmakers, replacing them with state-of-the-art low-pressure models.
One of the future projects that got underway in 2024 is the new multipurpose building at Pas de la Casa, with work on the foundations having already started. The works will stop during winter allowing the accesses to be operational, and they will resume in the summer of 2025 to begin erecting the structure. The building will have a total surface area of 3,200 m2 over three floors, with a welcome hall, ticket offices for purchasing passes and self-service ticket machines, shops, a ski rental shop, restaurants, and a space for the ski school. The new infrastructure will have 26 geothermal wells to heat the building so that it will largely run on green energy. The building will be constructed in phases and is scheduled to be ready for the 2026-2027 season.
This winter will be the first season in which the new Seig area, which opened in the middle of last season, will be operational from day one. This new area has added another 5 km to the Grandvalira domain with the new Seig chairlift and three new red slopes, bringing the resort total to 215 km on 140 slopes.
The Funicamp building has opened a new shop to purchase and rent skiing and snowboarding equipment, with a very large sales floor. The Snowpark in El Tarter sector will have new modules and the Snow Gardens in the Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo, and Pas de la Casa sectors have improved their outside image, while those in Encamp, Grau Roig, and Pas de la Casa have also upgraded all their pedagogical and methodological material. The Grau Roig nursery has expanded its space for greater capacity and control, as well as better optimisation and diversification of the play spaces.
Pal Arinsal
This chairlift was removed from the Port Negre area of the Pal Arinsal resort last season and was replaced by a new six-seater detachable chairlift. The new Port Negre de Arinsal Chairlift can transport around 2,400 people per hour, and its new kilometre-and-a-half route, longer than the previous one, has improved access to the upper section of the resort while revitalising the Niu area. The project is the first step toward the future ski link between the Pal and Arinsal sectors, also facilitating access to the connecting cable car.
This improvement, which cost €8.5 million, is one of Pal Arinsal's main investments in the last five years, during which it has invested €22.3 million into improving its facilities and optimising snowmaking and production, with new cannons and more efficient snow groomers to maintain the domain in optimal conditions. The resort has also fully renovated its restaurants in both the Arinsal and Pal sectors and has also made huge efforts to improve experiences with new activities. This year there will also be improvements to the Arinsal snowpark, with new modules, as well as a new merchandising point of sale in Arinsal and a new self-service ticket machine at the Orriols cable car. The Pal and Arinsal Snow Gardens are launching a new educational programme this year.
Ordino Arcalís
Just in the last five years, Ordino Arcalís has invested more than €15.8 million, mainly in improvements to slopes and facilities, but also in its restaurants and new major attractions, such as the Tristaina Sundial Balcony. A clear example of this improvement process carried out in recent years is the Planells beginners' area, which has grown from 3,500 m2 to 6,000 m2 and last year added a new surface lift. Another recent addition is the Tristaina Cable Car, one of the biggest projects the resort has taken on since its establishment. Comprehensive refurbishment work has also been carried out on restaurants such as those in La Coma, Planells, and L'Hortell, and the snowmaking network has been optimised with new snowmakers and snow groomers.
This season will see the start of work on the new reservoir for the creation of artificial snow, which will have a capacity of 36,000 m3 and be located in the La Coma sector. The project will be carried out in three phases and is planned to be completed in the 2025-2026 season.
The resort remains committed to families and has improved services for them, with special entrances to the Planells sector to provide easier access to the car park, the ticket offices, and the school. One point for kids to enjoy is the Freeride Kids circuit, which has been extended this year with the construction of an exciting new tunnel that can be both skied over and under. The Kids Forest, for its part, has added new dubbings to increase the adrenaline levels of young skiers.
High altitude cuisine
Grandvalira
This winter, continuing in the line of the most recent seasons, Grandvalira is elevating its offering with new gastronomic experiences, Premium spaces, and exclusive events for lovers of snow, cuisine, and après-ski, partnering with some of the top names in the culinary world and updating spaces with avant-garde designs.
One of the surprises this year is the arrival to the snow of chef Nandu Jubany, recipient of one Michelin star and five Repsol suns, who comes to Grandvalira to take over the Vodka Bar and Brasseria Piolet restaurants in the Grau Roig sector, where he will offer a varied, high-quality selection combined with a dynamic après-ski and night-time gastronomic experiences. The renowned chef's kitchen will provide catering services for the prestigious accommodations of Epic Andorra, where the experience of sleeping in the snowy mountains of Grandvalira will be enhanced with a culinary offering that goes beyond imagination.
Lovers of good food can also sign up for one of the Snow Club Gourmet days, luxurious events that this year will bring in top-level chefs like Paolo Casagrande (3 Michelin stars), Juanjo López (2 Repsol suns), José Sánchez (2 Repsol suns), Ugo Chan (1 Michelin star), and the Argentinian grill artists from Pampeana & Lana in Madrid.
These experiences can be enjoyed in addition to the iconic terraces and restaurants in the different Grandvalira sectors, like the spectacular glass tube of Bulthaup Grau Roig restaurant, which is unveiling a new terrace; the new Freixenet Lounge Pessons, a food truck to stop and enjoy a selection of cavas and champagnes; the mythic Wine & Meat Bar by Jean Leon with its selection of grilled meats and wines; the Refugio del Llac dels Pessons restaurant; and Racó de Solanelles, a hub for Grandvalira visitors looking for authenticity and a family atmosphere in an incomparable setting. In fact, Racó de Solanelles is celebrating its 25th anniversary this winter and is planning a very special event. Notably, the restaurant redesigned its terrace just last season.
Pal Arinsal
In Pal Arinsal, the former Expresso has become a new Pasta Box in Caubella with a fast and delicious trattoria experience designed for skiers who want to enjoy fresh food without wasting time, while the Caubella terrace is unveiling a space dedicated to vermouth, with a selection of products from the Espinaler brand. The Rústic restaurant, in the heart of Pal, has expanded its interior and exterior spaces to continue to cater to lovers of fondues and stone-cooked meat.
The iconic Pal Arinsal restaurants Coll de la Botella and Pla de la Cot are introducing a new menu. The former is focused on mountain cuisine and local products. Both restaurants remain open at night, when diners can enjoy the starry sky of Andorra at 2,000 m of elevation, a recognised Starlight destination, which includes an ascent in ratrack or snowmobiles.
Ordino Arcalís
The La Coma restaurant in Ordino Arcalís is also offering a programme of exclusive dinners during the season on special evenings such as full-moon nights, allowing diners to enjoy mountain cuisine in a singular setting with the spectacular nocturnal landscape as a backdrop.
The new dining options in Ordino Arcalís are centred on the Kokoi restaurant terrace, expanded since last winter to offer double the amount of space to relax and enjoy the après-ski atmosphere. This refurbished point will also host après-ski parties on certain Saturdays throughout the season, with live music and a special atmosphere to round off a day in the snow with a memorable end. Additionally, the barbecue in the Planells area will be serving hamburgers and Frankfurt sausages for those looking for a quick and tasty meal in the heart of the mountains with a more informal and authentic vibe.
Festivals, music, and non-stop après-ski
L'Abarset, the leading après-ski establishment, is back with a new season marked by new cuisine and a mind-blowing music programme with the last word in music festivals. Once again this year, the best DJs on the music scene will be invited to the famous El Tarter sector venue for the most glamorous après-ski afternoons. The star DJs expected this season include Davide Squillace, Maceo Plex, Dennis Cruz, Paco Osuna, Andrea Oliva, and Mestiza, to name just a few. L'Abarset has also confirmed that it will continue to work with top-level international promoters and has scheduled four Electronik Brunches and three Bresh Parties for the 2024-2025 season. Also returning this season are The Peak, L'Abarset's after party that, since last season, has created a format with a limited capacity inside the venue where revellers can dance until 2 a.m. on certain Saturdays throughout the season. And of course, L'Abarset also has a few surprises under its hat that will be revealed over the course of the season.
What's more, L'Abarset is launching a new menu for its aperitifs, lunches, and dinners, with the best market cuisine and seasonal products, in a space where gastronomy becomes art.
The seventh edition of the electronic music Hibernation Festival will take place from 14 to 16 March in Pas de la Casa. Last year's gathering attracted more than 10,000 attendees, who enjoyed an immersive concept with spectacular lighting for the best house, underground, and techno music from famous DJs with other emerging artists in the Andorran and international scenes. The terraces of the KSB will also feature activations and there will be the option of buying tickets together with ski passes.
New activities to round out the experience
The experience at Grandvalira Resorts always pushes the envelope, which is why the resorts offer a range of original, fun, and exclusive activities to enjoy the snow and the impressive beauty of Andorra's mountains.
In addition to magical activities like mushing and snowmobile excursions, there are now new thrills for the most adventurous types: the new sector for drytooling in Grau Roig, with a new circuit for climbing with ice axes and crampons on rock and ice routes, which is located just five minutes from the Pessons restaurant and will also be active in summer. There is a new route with two pitches for beginners and two new routes with an intermediate pitch.
The Grandvalira Mountain Guides (GMG), expert guides who offer activities to discover the resort in a different way, are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year with an event commemorating this decade-long adventure started in 2014, in which their services have cemented them as one of the resort's added values.
Once again, the GMG in Ordino Arcalís will offer ice climbing in La Coma de Arcalís, a waterfall that, when conditions are good, transforms to offer three ice pitches, different goulouttes, and even some mixed sections.
Pal Arinsal consolidates its position as the resort par excellence for Ski&Bike in the Pyrenees, and has announced that the resort's Bike Park, an international benchmark in the MTB sector, will open all year starting this winter. Throughout the ski season, it will be operational every day the resort is open, provided that the weather conditions and snow permit. The lower part of the park will be available to mountain bike fans to enjoy the five routes located in this area, with a total of 16 km of courses and an elevation difference of 700 m.
Sustainability and environment
Grandvalira Resorts has been working for more than two decades to become more sustainable and to protect the environment with major investments of nearly €200 million in the last 10 years, much of which has been spent on sustainability policies. Investments of this kind have also been made this year, grouped under three main headings: the promotion of renewable energy and energy-saving measures, the self-production of energy, and the optimisation of snowmaking with artificial snow.
In terms of self-production of energy, the Grandvalira Resorts works with the objective of becoming self-sufficient in the coming years. They currently produce 25% of the energy they need throughout the year, with 100% self-sufficiency in Ordino Arcalís, 37% in Pal Arinsal, and 6% in Grandvalira. This has been possible thanks to the development of infrastructures such as the Ordino Arcalís mini hydroelectric plant, inaugurated in 2016; the Pessons mini hydroelectric plant, in operation since the 2022-2023 season; and the Planell de la Tosa Solar Park, with 22,000 m2 of solar panels.
Each year, new solar panels are also installed on the roofs of buildings throughout the resort. This season has seen the installation of new panels on the building of the La Coma Restaurant, in Ordino Arcalís, adding to those already in place on numerous roofs of buildings throughout the resorts, such as the Grau Roig ski school, the Funicamp, the Gall de Bosc restaurant, and the La Massana cable car, among many others.
The resort also wants to facilitate the use of renewable energy for customers with the installation of new electrical vehicle charging points each year. Currently, Grandvalira Resorts has 113 electrical vehicle chargers throughout the resorts' 33 car parks, allowing owners of this type of vehicle to charge them while enjoying their day on the slopes. This year, up to 38 new charging points were added in the Grau Roig (10 new points), Pas de la Casa (10), and El Tarter (8) sectors in Grandvalira, and in Hortell in Ordino Arcalís (10).
Grandvalira
Another change this season is several buildings in Soldeu – El Tarter joining the FEDA Ecoterm heat network, which will result in a 30% saving in energy consumption, making it possible to have one of the lowest carbon footprints of any cogeneration system.
Pal Arinsal
Another aspect to report in terms of sustainability at Pal Arinsal is the use of earth recovered from construction projects in the parish to remodel sections of slopes in the Pal and Arinsal sectors. This work improves the customer's experience, but above all, it optimises the production of artificial snow, having a direct impact on the efficiency of energy and water management.
The resorts' sustainability efforts to reduce the carbon footprint do not go unnoticed and receive recognition year after year. Starting this season, Pal Arinsal will also have the FEDA (Forces Elèctriques d’Andorra) Green Energy certificate, which states that 100% of the electricity it consumes is from renewable sources, adding to the FEDA Green Energy certificate received by Granvalira Soldeu - El Tarter in 2022.
Ordino Arcalís
Since October 2020, the parish of Ordino has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: a designation awarded to places that strive to preserve their natural heritage in harmony with economic and human development. In this regard, the Ordino Arcalís resort is fully aware that with its privileged location also comes great responsibility for the environment and, for this reason, it has for many years been implementing sustainability policies. So much so that the resort has been recognised as a Company Committed to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Accordingly, Ordino Arcalís is also committed to sustainable mobility and has this year once again renewed its agreement with the municipality of Ordino to extend the parish bus service to the resort throughout the season, facilitating access and providing an additional service for the parish's hotels.
New international destinations with the Andorra Pass
The Andorra Pass has now become the only country ski pass that gives access to the Ordino Arcalís, Pal Arinsal, and Grandvalira resorts both in winter and in summer. A total of 308 skiable km, 217 slopes, and 123 surface lifts are all accessible with a single pass. Once again this year, the purchase of an Andorra Pass allows users to ski in a host of renowned ski resorts in Europe, America, and Asia. This year, it includes two huge new additions: the prestigious Les 3 Vallées (France), which includes Courchevel, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens, and Orelle, and Norway Home of Skiing (Norway), which includes the Beitostolen, Gausta, Geilo, Myrkdalen, Narvik, Norefjell, and Voss domains. The top-level destinations already included in the pass, in addition to these two newcomers, are the French resorts of Alpe de Huez and Les 2 Alpes; the American resorts Mammoth Mountain (California), Deer Valley (Utah), and Steamboat (Colorado); and the Swiss resort of Verbier, among many others, forming part of a wide range of international destinations that make it possible to ski all year long.
The Nord Pass, meanwhile, provides access to the resorts of Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, which together offer a total of over 93 skiable km and 47 mechanical lifts. The Nord Pass also includes up to 4 ski days at Grandvalira (2 days for those who purchase the Andorra resident rate) as well as a wide range of international destinations during winter, like Nevis Range (United Kingdom), Masella, Saint-Lary-Soulan, Font Romeu, Hautacam, and Gavarnie Gèdre (France), among others, the latter two with unlimited access.
Lovers of alternative snow sports can opt for the Mountain Pass, which puts at their disposal Grandvalira Resorts' 81.3 km of mountain skiing and 79.8 km of snowshoeing circuits along with a total of 13 lifts with one ascent and one descent per day included. This season there is a new modality, the Andorra Pass Vianant, which allows unlimited use of the same lifts included in the Mountain Pass, intended for people who do not want to practice any snow sports but instead simply come on foot to certain points or restaurants of the different sectors while waiting for their family members or friends and enjoy a good meal or the great views.
Since last season, Grandvalira Resorts has also been managing extracurricular ski season passes for school and university students and their companions who are residents of Andorra.
It should be noted that the Andorra Pass, Nord Pass, and all extracurricular ski passes will also be valid during the 2024 summer season and will allow access to Grandvalira Resorts’ operational lifts, including those for the Pal Arinsal Bike Park.
In parallel, once again this year, Grandvalira Resorts is part of the prestigious Ikon Pass, the world's benchmark season ticket, which gives access to more than 50 destinations all across the globe, a selection of the most iconic and prestigious resorts in the United States, Canada, Asia, Oceania, and Europe. The Andorran resorts have belonged to this group since 2022.
Updated brand campaigns
Grandvalira Resorts has once again engaged the prestigious international agency VML, part of the WPP international advertising holding company, to create new brand campaigns for the resorts for this winter.
Grandvalira will continue with The infinite winter and has made a statement of intent for this season to continue positioning the resort as a sector benchmark, highlighting its differential value and heightening the feeling of belonging with the claim “if you feel it, it's yours”. To strengthen this pride, Grandvalira has created the Infinite winter anthem, a creation of the producers and composers Ale Acosta (nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2024) and Juan Battista, performed by the National Classical Orchestra of Andorra (ONCA). Two seasons ago, the resort committed to creating a new brand platform that would allow it to raise its positioning, adopting a disruptive communication tone and a unique visual language, using black and white to convey elegance and distinction. The Grandvalira Resorts Marketing Director added that "this year we wanted to go a step further, adding one of the most exciting creative resources: music. We created the infinite winter anthem, fusing classical and electronic instruments. To perform it, we wanted to bring in ONCA. It's a thrilling project for us that will surely allow us to connect with our audience in a very special way".
Pal Arinsal launches the claim We Are Mountains, We Are Ski&Bike, summarising everything the resort represents. On one hand, We Are Mountains expresses the essence of skiing and the place that brings together the values of the mountains: connection with nature, respect, freedom, friendship, individual achievement, honesty, authenticity, and self-knowledge. With We Are Ski&Bike, the campaign recalls that Pal Arinsal is a leading ski area for all publics both in winter, with a complete skiable offering, and in summer, with its prestigious Bike Park.
For the second season, Ordino Arcalís is centring its winter campaign on its clientele: people who very often do not follow the established order of things and are governed by their own rules and by what they feel at any given moment. In short, indomitable people who know that Ordino Arcalís is a leading resort with kilometres of wild nature where they can experience intense thrills. It has also become a renowned resort in the world of freeride thanks to its extraordinary mountains, where skiers can feel genuinely free in a limitless environment.
