The infection

How is it transmitted?

A person infected with Covidien-19 can transmit the virus through respiratory drops by coughing or sneezing. Another person can become infected when any of these secretions enters the mouth, nose, or eyes. It can also become infected by touching a surface contaminated with these secretions and then touching the eyes, mouth or nose. If people are more than a meter away, transmission of the infection is unlikely.

One of the privileged vectors of virus transmission is the contact of unwashed hands.

Incubation period

The incubation period of the disease has been estimated between 2 and 12 days, but it can be up to 14 days.

Clinical manifestations

Most people with Covid-19 have mild symptoms and recover. The symptoms of the disease are manifested by fever, cough or breathing difficulties (a person who does not have any of the symptoms of the disease does not spread it).

Some people, mainly those older than 60 years and those with previous pathology, can develop a more serious picture that requires hospital admission.

Basic hygiene measures

Because the transmission of COVID-19 is through coughing or sneezing of people with the disease or by touching contaminated surfaces with their hands and then touching their eyes, lips or nose, prevention is is based on the disruption of the transmission chain by means of basic hygiene measures.

Specifically, the actions to be guaranteed are:

  • Keep workspaces clean.
  • Surfaces (tables) and objects (phones, keyboards, door knobs, elevator buttons, etc.) should be cleaned regularly with disinfectant, preferably every day.
  • Promote frequent hand washing for employees and clients.
  • Allow staff and customers to access spaces where their hands can be washed with soap and water.
  • Wash your hands: Your hands should often be washed with soap for 15-30 seconds, and especially after coughing, sneezing, or going to the toilet and before eating.
  • Promote respiratory hygiene: Importance of respiratory hygiene (cover your mouth and nose with sneezing or coughing with a disposable tissue, or with your elbow if you don’t have one).
  • Promote access to disposable handkerchiefs at the workplace.
  • Use alternative media (briefings, intranet reminders, etc.) to promote these measures.
